Sip of Chai

Masala Chai, Cutting Chai and Adarak Wali Chai got a new address from roadside to a dedicated tea café. Rakesh kumar takes a few sips

If a group of well-suited executives were to ask for “Cutting Chai” in an up-market restaurant, heads would certainly turn. Associated with  roadside tea stalls, Cutting Chai has been an all-time favourite with  all those frequenting dhabas. Coming as a surprise for all those who thought “good chai” was available only at a roadside stall or dhaba,  Cutting Chai has got a new space with a chain of cafés known as Chaayos. Developed by two IIT graduates, Nitin Saluja and Raghav Verma, the café offers a delightful array of more than 25 varieties of tea customizable in over 12,000 ways or as per an individual’s need.
“The idea of a Tea Café came up when my partner Nitin Saluja and his wife were on a trip. His wife was fond of tea, so they kept looking for tea everywhere but failed to find it. ‘Ek achi chai nahi milti yahan,’ his wife commented. That’s how the idea came to their mind,” said Raghav Verma. Since that incident, the duo kept thinking, when coffee can have such outlets, why can’t tea? Moreover, it is the beverages we have grown up drinking. “No doubt coffee culture is there in India, but I think if we have the same kind of outlet dedicated to tea it can also get the same popularity,” asserted Raghav Verma. “Moreover, just check the rates. If you go in any other café like CCD or Barissta for tea, it would cost around Rs 300. Whereas, in Chaayos, prices are a maximum Rs 200 only.”
The concept is just eight months oldand in this short duration, the two friends have come up with six stores, all in the NCR with corporate approach. With their motto, "Experiments with Chai", they offer fresh, gourmet and customised “chais” in a relaxed ambience, with a wide variety of tea, including Desi Chai, which can be made with an option of 12 add-ons; Indian specialty teas like God's Chai, Hari Mirch Chai, Aam Papad Chai and Pahadi Chai; and exotic teas like Moroccan Mint and Camomile tea. Visiting the cafe at Noida 62, we started with the Desi Chai. The option of 12 add-ons include tulsi, adrak, elaichi, cinnamon, ajwain, kali mirch, saunf, mint, laung, moti elaichi and hari mirch. Next in our list was Aam Papad Chai, Gods Chai and Hari Mirch Chai, with the last number scoring over the others. “As you can see, most of the ingredients, like tulsi, elaichi or ajwain, are very beneficial for health, while in the case of coffee it is totally opposite,” said Verma.
With every sip, one can differentiate the flavours of each ingredient. For instance, in Hari Mirch Chai the chilli lends an altogether different aroma and taste. The same goes with God’s Chai,

a take on the Himalayan tea, or Aam Papad Chai. Among classic teas, Darleeling First Flush was hit among the customers. Apart from hot “chai”, Chaayos also serves iced teas in a variety of flavours, hot coffee, hot chocolate and Bournevita, milkshakes and fruit shakes as well. In addition, Chaayos offers a broad range of Indian and international sandwiches (customers swear by "2-minutes Maggi Sandwich" and "One Calorie Sandwich"), and finger licking street food like Keema Pav and Vada Pav.

Emperor’s food

On urgent request from their patrons, Kama, the signature Indian restaurant of Radisson Blu, has come up with a non-veg menu. Rakesh kumar samples the new fare
It was the Jain and Pandit population around Kama, a restaurant in the Radission Blue Ghaziabaad, which led it to start as a totally vegetarian restaurant. The only logic behind this move was to provide the best vegetarian food around NCR. However, this didn’t last long, because the place has not proved popular among vegetarians and kept away hardcore non-vegetarians. After continual requests from their patrons, Kama, the signature Indian restaurant of Radisson Blu have come up with their non-veg menu. And to check their non-veg offerings like Galouti Kebab, as well as traditional delicacies like Murgh Changezi and Nalli Boti Ki Nihari, we made our way to the fine dining restaurant.

Ambiance
As per its name ~ the Indian restaurant of Radisson Blu has a traditional Indian touch, which is visible everywhere in their décor. As one steps into the restaurant, one can hear Gazals sound in a dim light. However, not everone seemed to enjoy the music.

Food
The restaurant offers delectable non-vegetarian dishes comprising robust flavours of the traditional North Indian cuisine, prepared with much guarded secrets of gastronomical excellence of a bygone era. Our culinary journey began with Galouti kebabs, Sikandari Raan and Dahi elaichi kebab as starters. While we were enjoying the starters, the restaurant’s head chef came up to us and informed us about the offerings on their main course ~ Murgh

changezi, Nalli boti nihari, Mutton Firdausi, Dum biryani. In vegetarian section, Dal-e-Kama stood out along with home style Baingan bharta and Lahori paneer. It all looked so tempting, we requested the chef to let us taste them all. He then suggested his best offering ~ Emperor Thali, which had Tawa Murg Kali Mirch, Murg Changenzi and Dal to name a few with a bowl of rice and breads. Believe me, it was an excellent offering as it had almost all their special dishes. Not only the taste what impressed us was the style of serving, which transported one to Mughal era. Food is served on a huge plate with many small bowls filled with a variety of food.
Note it was more than enough for a single person so better order when you two. For dessert, we ordered Faluda Kulfi, which was decorated beautifully and tasted refreshing.
Service: Service is very quick here. You won’t have to wait a long for the next order. Staff is very friendly ~ they will be near you all the time.
Verdict: If one feels like a taste of traditional North Indian food, plan a visit here. And, yes, order for their Emperor Thali.

Imperfect world

Nothing is in perfect order in the newly-opened restaurant Imperfecto. Yet, its popularity is growing, reports rakesh kumar

Everything looks messed up or cluttered in the newly-opened restaurant Imperfecto Gurgaon. Cycles are strung upside down cycles along the walls that are adorned with warped paintings, chairs are hung on the walls, beds used for tables and upside down lamps act as ceiling lights ~ in other words, it is a topsy turvy world. And in this imperfect place, people could be seen enjoying themselves. Certainly, imperfection is the restaurant's USPs to set it apart from other high-end restaurants in the Capital. For us this was also one of the reasons to step into the restaurant.

Ambience
Located on the 2nd floor in the DLF Cyber Hub, Gurgaon, the first thing that struck us was the ambience and the decor. Lovely curtains, colours and installations all across the restaurant make it very tempting to walk through the place. Once inside one realises why it is called "Imperfecto". The restaurant has both in-door seating and alfresco area but not in order. Their wooden stairs, metal art work at the entrance, dim lights, water body inside may be impressive, but at the same time the loud music, which can be heard from a distance could put one off. All in all, the place has a very lounge feel in the way they have set up the seating arrangements, with the bar giving a happening feel.

Food

The restaurant's chef Nuria Rodriguez Parra is Spanish, and needless to mention, she is a master in
Mediterranean and Spanish food. The menu has roasts, grills, burger, main courses, sandwiches, pizzas and desserts. And their bar offers wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. We started our culinary journey with Pizza Chicken with Barbecue Sauce, made up of chicken marinated with exotic herbs, fresh tomatoes and basil, mozzarella, oregano, and extra-virgin olive oil ~ it was superb. Next on the platter was Risotto Fungi Porcini with champagne ~ Risotto with mushroom porcini Italian, flavours of basil, parmesan cheese, French champagne and olive oil, served with bread. It was a vegetarian dish and more than its taste I liked their serving style. Then there was Chicken in Pesto Sauce ~ Chicken marinated with pesto sauce, roasted garlic, onion, herbs and olive oil and grilled. The final fare was Exotic Mushrooms with Garlic made up with a typical Tapas from the Spanish capital, with flavours of spice and herbs, also served with bread. For dessert we had Pudding of Chocolate.
Not to miss: If one decides to visit the restaurant, get ready for one surprise. Their chef Nuria Rodriguez will suddenly appear at your table, with offerings like a small portion of  Pizza or drink. Don't hesitate to pick it because that is free of cost or one of their promotional tactics.

Service:
This is one area that needs to improve since there were long gaps between one dish and the next.
Verdict: Fond of Spanish or Mediterranean food? Add Imperfecto to your list

A journey to Niagara

Nature seems to have been very generous to the Niagara region, blessing it with a stupendous falls, wineries and much more, finds rakesh kumar

Just around two hours’ drive from Canada’s bustling city of Toronto, one will land in the Niagara region. The region is a tourist hub for several reasons, be it its 70 wineries along the wine route or its quaint town Niagara-on-the-lake that will welcome you with its enticing boutiques, charming inns and beautiful gardens and of course the largest waterfall in the world ~ Niagara Falls. While the falls are the first stop to any visit to the region, the place has everything to attract tourists from all over the world. Feel the water  spray at the Niagara Falls on a boat tour, take a journey behind the falls, get a breathtaking view from above on a helicopter ride or dine in a revolving restaurant overlooking the falls at the Skylon Tower.  All these make the region a must visit place for every tourist, who is on a visit to Canada or wants to visit the country.

Niagara by helicopter

Our first encounter with Niagara Falls began with the helicopter, and looking at the waterfall from helicopter was like a lifetime experience for all of us. I won’t hesitate to say there is no better  place than over the Niagara Falls. It defiantly met all expectation and more! The six-seater helicopter, in only ten minutes, took us to every major site of Niagara Falls. The aerial view from helicopter is  a combination of both adventure with awe-inspiring views, which is unparallel. Without hesitation I would recommend this and I would also jump at the chance to do it again. At the end of the flight we were only too eager to purchase a huge photo of us in the helicopter withpictures of the falls surrounding us.

Maid of the Mist
The experience of the great falls from a helicopter heightened our  eagerness to feel the Niagara from near. And only Maid of the Mist could fulfill this desire. The boat took us to the falls for an  up-close view. One can only experience the full force and fury of the falls from the bottom. The tour operators provide plastic rainwear, but be prepared to get soaked nevertheless. All points in the boat are good for viewing since the vessel makes a loop. Truly an experience not to be missed. But make sure your camera and other electronic
gadget don’t get wet.

 Journey behind the falls
If visiting Niagara Falls, don't miss this attraction. It is literally  an elevator ride to around 150 feet behind and beneath the falls. Then you can read the history on the walls, as you walk through the tunnels to feel the rage of the falls. Outdoor observation decks put you just feet from the edge of the falls. The experience is unbelievable. Prepare to get soaked, even though you are provided with plastic rain gear.

Meal with a view

Not only its falls, the region offers a mouthwatering cuisine too by their celebrity chefs. At the same time, the stunning view of Niagara Falls is an ingredient that makes dining at the falls an experience to  remember. If you are looking for fine dining at its best or want to relax with some delicious casual fare, then your journey will end at the restaurant of hotel Sheraton Windows. It is thof the Niagara.

For kids

There is a lot to do for children also at the falls. The Niagara Falls  has a veritable theme park with ultra tall buildings (Skylon Tower), water parks inside hotels, Ferris wheels and kids-friendly restaurants
(Clifton Hill), the Butterfly Conservatory, Marineland and let’s not forget the falls!
e place where one can enjoy a meal by chef Jamie Kennedy, who uses local organic ingredients for a true farm-to-table experience along with the extraordinary view. There is also Skylone Tower, which is a revolving  restaurant 775 feet above the falls. Or Elements restaurant, with a beautiful view

Picture perfect

Adventure, shopping, entertainment... the Blue Mountain Village in Ontario, Canada, has everything to make it a perfect holiday destination, finds Rakesh Kumar
Tired of the hustle and bustle of city life or intend to take a break from the highly industrialised or corporate life then head for Blue Mountain hills of Ontario. Situated in the lap of mountainous terrain, the area is only a two-hour drive north of Toronto, which makes it a really convenient destination for everyone. If one were on a trip to Ontario then giving it a miss would not be wise. And so, after going around Toronto and Niagara region, it was time for us to halt for a taste of rustic life.
Since the area is nestled at the foot of the slopes, it is blessed with greenery and serenity. Though we had  heard a lot from our guide our first sight of the village took our breath away. There is a lot to do in the area and the whole region caters to every age. It houses nice beaches, gondola tri
ps to the top of the mountain, hiking, biking, mountain coaster ride, nice restaurants, and much more. But what can make one fall in love with the area is lounging beside a fire pit and enjoying buskers, concerts and a host of winter events. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride, stroll down the cobblestone streets visiting unique shops, or step into one of the many restaurants for a gourmet meal or quick treat. This in a nutshell describes the Blue Mountain Village.

Place to stay
One can go for high end modern facilities with all the amenities or look for a beautiful rustic home in a natural setting. The Westing Trillium, the largest resort in the area, will fulfil both these conditions. Situated between the shores of Georgian Bay and the heights of the Niagara Escarpment, the resort is built in the architectural style of grand Georgian Bay lodges. The rooms of the resort are themselves just beautiful and perfect for families with a small kitchen. Outside the resort there is a small pond, where one can hear the sound of tadpoles and frogs. Kids can be seen catching these frogs.

What to shop
Shoppers will find a heaven in the Blue Mountain Village. Just a short walk from the hotel will land you the market. The village houses around 25 shopping centres, restaurants and bars. If you are a fashion freak wanting the latest trends or want home décor or sports equipment or home accessories, don't worry the the village shops will fulfil all your demands. The good point of the market is that it could be covered in a very short span of time.
In our two days stay at the village we searched out almost all the shops of the villages. Though it a was little expensive, but discount offers tempted us to go ahead and buy gifts or clothes.

Food
If you want to please the taste buds, then village eateries have something for everyone. To enjoy a meal with  family Oliver and Bonacini restaurant (in Westin Trillium House resort) would serve the purpose. If one wants to taste different foreign cuisine then Tholos will help you out and if you are a pizza lover, then the village has Firehall Pizza to answer your demand. Here there are so many eating options from Beavertail to burger or from Italian pizza to casual gourmet dining, one could go on and on.

Choose your adventure
If it is fun or adventure one seeks, then Blue Mountain Village beckons. Here you have to choose your own adventure and the staff at Activity Central (that takes care of adventure activities in the village) will introduce you to a whole new world of activities and recreation. The place offers Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, Timber Challenge High Ropes, Zip Lining, Open Air Gondola, Mountain Biking, Plunge Aquatic Center and list goes on. Whether you want to invest an entire day, or just want to sneak in something quick before dinner, you will find every adventure here. Though we wanted to try out each of them, being short of time we tried only Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster. This takes riders on an exhilarating coaster ride as it twists and turns down the mountain thorough varied terrain. Here riders can control their speed and enjoy the stunning views of Georgian Bay and surrounding Niagara Escarpment.

Timber Challenge High Ropes
This features suspension bridges, ladders, cargo nets, zip lines and more, Reaching 50 ft above the forest floor, the timber challenge winds through the canopy with awe-inspiring views and breathtaking heights.  One caveat is that this high rope course is quite challenging physically, so it might not be a good idea to try it after an indulgent night of food and drink.

Open Air Gondola
If you want the view from the top of the mountain without having to work for it then it will solve your purpose. It will take you to a scenic ride to the top of the Escarpment.

Scenic caves
A description of Blue Mountain would be incomplete without talking about Scenic Caves. This is one of Canada's great natural wonders and is located at the highest part of the Niagara Escarpment. It gives a chance to trek thorough the mysterious caves and caverns that were formed over the course of hundreds of millions of years of ice movement. In an hour long trip we ventured deep inside the mountain, explored a labyrinth of caves and crevices. Here one could end up exploring places like Natural Refrigerator, Ice Caves that are frozen round the year, Lovers Rest, Fat Man's Misery, the narrowest spot of 36
centimeter, Ekarenniondi, a marked path to the mysterious underworld or the hidden natural fortress which sheltered the Petun people from their enemies or the longest suspension footbridge in Ontario (126 metres long). In fact, there is a lot more to explore.
Eco adventure
Since the whole area of Blue Mountain Resort is known for adventure sports, there were several activities being conducted in this 200-year-old forest. The most prominent is Zip Lining, the longest zip trip covering more than  half-mile and dropping a dizzying 48 meters from the cliff top to earth. It is a little scary but a must try. Clipped to a cable you soar from one location to the next.
Scandinave Spa
After all this trekking in Scenic Caves and adventure activities at Blue Mountain Village resort, a visit to the spa was justified. We stopped at Scandinave Spa. Just a few minutes drive from downtown Collingwood and Blue Mountain Resort and nestled in a natural forest setting, the spa will cleanse your body and mind with its hot baths and refreshing cold plunges.
